Exclude (blacklist) customers and product categories from loyalty in Lightspeed Retail POS (X-Series)

For Lightspeed Retail (X-Series) POS merchants

(Formerly known as Vend POS)

By default all customers and product categories are enrolled in your loyalty program. However, you have the option to blacklist (exclude) specific customers and/or products. Blacklisting customers allows you to exclude particular customer groups such as employees, suppliers, and other types from your loyalty program. Similarly, blacklisting product categories enables you to exclude certain products from your loyalty program, preventing customers from earning points for purchasing these items.


Exclude (blacklist) customers from loyalty in Lightspeed Retail (X-Series) POS

Before you get started with blacklisting customers from loyalty

Here are some key details to note before getting started with blacklisting product customers in Lightspeed Retail (X-Series) POS

  • By default, all customers can earn points for purchasing any product from any category.

  • Marsello uses Lightspeed Retail (X-Series) POS Customer Groups for Customer Blacklisting.

  • Blacklisted customers are removed from loyalty only. Blacklisted customers are still eligible to receive email marketing. If you already have a customer type that you would like to exclude, please skip ahead to the next section


Create a customer group to exclude in Lightspeed Retail (X-Series) POS

1. In your Lightspeed Retail (X-Series) POS admin, go to the Customers, and click Groups


2. On the Customer Groups page, click Add Group


3. Name your group, then click Add GroupYour customer group will now be created in your Lightspeed account.


4. In the Customers nav, Click Customers to return to your customer list


5. Search for the customer by name, customer code, or contact details


6. Click on the Pencil Icon to edit the customer's details


7. Click the Customer group drop-down and select your new customer group

8. Click Save Customer to assign that customer to the group


Repeat this for all of the customers that you would like to exclude from your loyalty program.


How to exclude a customer group from loyalty

1. In your Marsello app admin, go to Settings > Loyalty > Points program


2. Under Order Rewarding, go to Exclude customers that are tagged with one of:


3. Click to open the drop-down, then click the Lightspeed Retail (X-Series) Customer group tag

4. Click Save

Now, customers in this Lightspeed Retail (X-Series) customer group will be excluded from your loyalty program. They will not earn points when they make a purchase in-store.

πŸ“ Note: If you want to add the customer back into your loyalty program in the future, just remove them from the customer group in Lightspeed Retail (X-Series).


How it works – Your customers' experience

If a blacklisted customer makes a purchase, the customer will not earn points for that order.

Before you get started with blacklisting product categories from loyalty

Here are some key details to note before getting started with blacklisting product categories in Lightspeed Retail (X-Series) POS:

  • By default, your customers can earn points for purchasing any product from any category.

  • Marsello uses Lightspeed Retail (X-Series) POS', Product Tag for Blacklisting.


How to exclude product categories from loyalty

1. In your Marsello admin, go to your Loyalty tab and select Settings


2. On this page, scroll down to your store's Lightspeed Retail (X-Series) Order Rewarding, go to Do not reward points on products that belong to one of these categories


3. Click to open the drop-down, then click the Product Tag that you would like to exclude from your loyalty program

πŸ“ Note: If you have just added the product to the product category, it can take 15mins to sync into Marsello settings. You can also exclude as many Lightspeed Product Tags from your loyalty program as needed.

4. Click Save

How it works – Your customers' experience

If the customer's purchase includes a product that is in the blacklisted category, the customer will not earn points for that particular product.


In your Marsello admin, under the customer's profile, this will show as a line item in the points calculation.

πŸ“ Note: If the customer has other products that are not a part of the blacklisted category, the customer can still earn points for those products.


Prevent customers from earning points when purchasing a gift card in Lightspeed Retail (X-Series) POS

⚠️ Important: By default, when a customer purchases a Lightspeed Retail (X-Series POS Gift Card), Marsello applies points based on the amount the customer spent on the gift card. As a retailer, you don't earn the revenue from a gift card until it is spent on your merchandise, so we advise you to blacklist gift card purchases from earning points to prevent customers from taking advantage of the Loyalty Program.

Add a tag to the Lightspeed Retailer (X-Series) POS Gift Card Product so you can blacklist gift cards from earning points twice

1. In Lightspeed Retailer (X-Series), navigate to Catalog


2. Use the search bar or scroll to locate your Gift Card product

3. Click on the product's name: Gift Card


4. At the end of the URL, type: /update


5. Scroll down to the Tags section


6. Add a new tag, for example: gift card

⚠️ Important: Do not make any other changes to this product as it can cause irreversible damage to your Lightspeed Retailer (X-Series) account.

7. Click Save


Update your Marsello settings to prevent customers from earning points on gift card purchases

1. In Marsello, navigate to Settings > Loyalty > Points program


2. Scroll down to Lightspeed Retail (X-Series) POS (Vend) Order Rewarding


3. Add your new tag to the "Do not reward points on products that belong to one of these categories"

4. Click Save.
