Simple steps to follow to help prevent your campaigns from being clipped by Gmail

What is a email clipping?

When an email's message size exceeds 102KB (excluding images), Gmail automatically clips the email. When an email is clipped, the full content is hidden behind a 'View entire message' link, which directs the recipient to a web version of the email.

What can I do to stop my emails from being clipped?

Here are a few suggestions to help stop your emails from being clipped in Gmail:

  • Refresh the subject line of your test emails

Gmail frequently groups emails with the same subject line into a single thread in your inbox. If you send multiple test emails for the same campaign, the thread may become large enough for Gmail to clip the email. While this clipping is unlikely to occur when the email is sent to your contacts, it's a good idea to change the subject line or delete previous test emails from your inbox before sending a new test.

  • Remove any extra code from content that is copied and pasted

If you copy and paste any content from another source (for example, a website or a blog) be sure to remove any extra links that are not required for your email campaign. This can be done via the text editor in your email campaign.

  • Condense email content where applicable to reduce the size

    • Delete any unnecessary images

      • Changing image dimensions in your email campaign won't impact the size of your campaign, however, if you have any images that can be removed this will help to remove any associated code and reduce the message size.

    • Add "View email in browser" link to your campaign

      • Replacing some email content with a link to direct recipients to the full content of an email.

        • To add a "view email in browser" link to your email campaign from the email editor, double-click into the text you wish to link. This will open a secondary email editor where you can select the merge tags drop-down menu > email details > view email in browser.

    • Avoid heading blocks

      • The heading bar block is a code-heavy element due to its extensive styling options and ability to dynamically adjust for desktop and mobile devices.

If your email is being clipped and you’re using a heading block, consider replacing it with an image block for your logo, followed by a text block for your links.

      • If you’ve added a background image to a section, removing it can help reduce the message size

    • Consolidate blocks and sections

      • Whenever possible, consolidate multiple blocks, sections, and column layouts with similar styles into a single element. For example, four small text blocks with the same font style, color, and size add more to your email’s code weight than a single large text block.

      • If your template includes many sections or column layouts, consider merging similar ones. For instance, if you have two consecutive two-column layouts, try combining their content into a single two-column layout.
