What is Email Clipping?
Email clipping occurs when the size of your email exceeds 102KB (excluding images). Gmail automatically shortens such emails, hiding the full content behind a "View entire message" link. This redirects recipients to a web version of the email, potentially reducing engagement.
What can I do to stop my emails from being clipped?
Here are a few suggestions to help stop your emails from being clipped in Gmail:
Refresh the subject line of your test emails
Gmail often threads emails with identical subject lines. If you send multiple test emails for the same campaign, the growing thread size may trigger clipping. To avoid this:
Change the subject line for each test email
Delete older test emails from your inbox before sending new ones
Remove unnecessary code from copied content
When copying content from external sources (e.g., websites or blogs), extra formatting and links can inflate the email size. Use your email editor to clean up unnecessary code and links before finalizing the email.
Condense email content where applicable to reduce the size
Condense text: Keep your message concise and to the point
Delete unnecessary images: Removing unused images reduces the overall code size. Note that resizing images alone won’t help, as their code remains in the email
Add "View email in browser" link to your campaign
Direct recipients to the full version of your email using a "View email in browser" link. To add this:
Double-click the text you want to link in your email editor
Select the merge tags drop-down menu > Email Details > View Email in Browser
Avoid heading blocks
The heading bar block is a code-heavy element due to its extensive styling options and ability to dynamically adjust for desktop and mobile devices.
Replace heading blocks with simpler alternatives, such as an image block for your logo and a text block for links
Remove background images, as they add unnecessary code weight
Consolidate blocks and sections
Whenever possible, consolidate multiple blocks, sections, and column layouts with similar styles into a single element. For example, four small text blocks with the same font style, color, and size add more to your email’s code weight than a single large text block.
If your template includes many sections or column layouts, consider merging similar ones. For instance, if you have two consecutive two-column layouts, try combining their content into a single two-column layout.
