Glossary of Segment conditions: definitions and insights

Targeted marketing is essential for optimizing campaigns. This glossary of Marsello's segment conditions will help define your audience.

Before you get started:

Here are some key details to note before you begin crafting your custom segments:

  • Marsello custom segment conditions are broken down by the following demographics:

    • Customer conditions

    • Purchase data

    • Loyalty program

    • Feedback

    • Email marketing

  • Marsello's segment report will only display those customers who have accepted marketing. If you wish to see all customers who meet these segment conditions, you will need to export the list

  • When using a custom segment as your target audience, Marsello will only contact those customers who have accepted marketing


Customer conditions

When creating a custom segment based on customer conditions, you can build your segment based on the following customer details:

  • First name

  • Last name

  • Email

  • Mobile

  • Mobile country code

    • This may be added into the segment conditions as digits or the country's name

  • Gender

    • The gender conditions to segment will vary by merchant as these are pulled from the customizations saved in your creating a profile earn option.

  • Birthdate

    • This segment conditions uses an actual date.

    • Currently, the feature is unable to segment customers by birth month. If this is a feature that will be helpful to you, please let our support team know and they will put through a feature request for you.

  • Age

  • Created at date

    • Please note if you install Marsello today and have customers who created an account last year, their created at date will be noted as today.

  • RFM Customer Segment (these are Marsello's predefined segment conditions)

    • Lost (customers who haven't purchased in over 3 purchase cycles)

    • At-risk (customers who haven't purchased in 2 purchase cycles

    • Best (customers who have purchased more than once in the last purchase cycle)

    • Loyal (customers who purchased in the past few purchase cycles and often)

    • Promising (new customers who have made more than one purchase within this purchase cycle)

    • New (customers who have made their first purchase within this purchase cycle)

    • Window Shoppers (customers who have signed up but have not purchased yet)

    • Abandoned cart (for Shopify merchants only)

  • Custom tag

    • This is from custom tag imports

  • City

  • Country

  • State Zip


Purchase data conditions

You can further customize a customer segment based on purchase patterns:

  • Last purchase date

  • Total purchase

  • Total spend

  • Average spend per purchase

  • Product(s) purchased

  • Product collection(s) purchased

  • Site purchased from

πŸ“ Note: The segment feature analyzes order data starting from the date Marsello was installed. It does not include sales data from before the installation. For example, if you use conditions like "average spend per purchase" or "product purchased," these will only consider purchases made from the installation date onward.


Loyalty program conditions

Want to send a campaign to boost customer engagement with your loyalty program? Use these segment conditions to get started:

  • Current points balance

  • Total points collected

  • Current year-to-date points

    • The current year-to-date points condition is set to the calendar year (January 1 - December 31)

  • Current year-to-date spend

    • The current year-to-date spend condition is set to the calendar year (January 1 - December 31)

  • Current VIP tier

    • This condition looks for the customer's VIP tier at-the-time the segment is run. If the customer should change tiers after this segment is saved, the customer will automatically be removed from this segment and added to the correct segment (if created)

  • Last satisfaction rating

  • Feedback date received

  • Google review rating

  • Google review posted at


Email marketing

Looking to resend a campaign to customers who didn't open the original, or thank those who signed up through a marketing form? Use these conditions to help get started:

  • Sign up form

    • This condition will pull all those customers who have signed up via your selected form and accept marketing

  • Campaign email sent

    • The campaign email sent condition will allow you to select an email campaign by it's name

  • Campaign email last sent date

    • This condition will help you understand when customers are opening your campaigns (on the initial send or when the campaign is boosted)

  • Campaign email opened

    • The campaign email opened condition will tell you which customers have opened your email

  • Campaign email last open date

    • This condition will tell the last date in which the email campaign was opened by the customer

  • Campaign email clicked

    • The campaign email clicked condition indicates which customers have clicked links within your campaign

  • Campaign email last clicked date

    • This condition will help you understand when the customer has clicked links in your email.
