How do I exclude or blacklist customers in Shopify?

Blacklisting allows you to control who can earn loyalty points and which products qualify for rewards in your Marsello loyalty program. You can exclude specific customer groups (e.g., staff or suppliers) you donโ€™t want contributing to point earnings.

By default, all customers and all products are eligible to earn points. This guide explains how to blacklist customers, product tags, and product collections using Shopify and Marsello.


How do I exclude (blacklist) customers from loyalty in Shopify?

โš ๏ธ Important: Read before blacklisting customers for loyalty.

  • By default, all customers are eligible to earn loyalty points.

  • Customer blacklisting in Marsello is managed using Shopify Customer Tags.

  • When a customer is blacklisted, they are excluded from loyalty rewards onlyโ€”they will still receive email marketing.

  • If you already have an existing customer tag you want to exclude, you can skip ahead to the next section.loyalty,

Create a customer group in Shopify

โ€‹1. In your Shopify admin, go to Customers


โ€‹โ€‹2. Under All Customers, select the customer(s) you would like to exclude

In your Shopify admin, go to "Customers." Under "All Customers," select the customer(s) you would like to exclude.

3. Scroll to the bottom of your customer list and click on the three dots next to Bulk Edit

4. Click Add Tags

Click "Add Tags" to assign tags to selected customers.

4. Name your tag, e.g. Loyalty Blacklist - Staff, then click Save

Name your tag (e.g., "Loyalty Blacklist - Staff") and then click "Save."

Your customer tag will now be created in your Shopify account.

How to exclude a customer tag from loyalty

1. In your Marsello app admin, go to Settings > Loyalty > Points Program


2. Under Order Rewarding, go to Exclude customers that are tagged with one of:


โ€‹โ€‹3. Click to open the drop-down, then click the Shopify Customer tag

In your Marsello app admin, go to "Settings." Under "Order Rewarding," go to "Exclude customers that are tagged with one of." Click to open the drop-down menu, then select the Shopify customer tag.

4. Click Save. โ€‹Now, customers in this Shopify customer group will be excluded from your loyalty program. They will not earn points when they make a purchase.

๐Ÿ“ Note: If you want to add the customer back into your loyalty program in the future, just remove the Shopify tag from the customer in Shopify.


How it works โ€“ Your customers' experience

If a blacklisted customer makes a purchase, the customer will not earn points for that order.
