How do I add a new customer to my Lightspeed Retail (R-Series) POS customer database?

You can add new customers to your Marsello database directly from your Lightspeed Retail (R-Series) POS during a sale. This ensures customer details, marketing preferences, and purchase data are automatically synced.


Before you start

Lightspeed Retail (R-Series) POS is accessible on both desktop and iPad. Ensure the following installation requirements are complete:

Using Lightspeed Retail R-Series on desktop

  • Your POS sites are enabled under the Integrations page

  • You have added your Loyalty button on your Lightspeed Retail (R-Series) POS sales screen.

Using Lightspeed Retail R-Series on iPad

  • You must be use the "Older" POS sales screen of R-Series. This is accessed via the Settings > Sales tile.

  • All users must have "Associate" or "Manager" permissions to access the "Settings" > "Sales tile" interface.

Marsello is only supported on the Older POS sales screen in Lightspeed Retail (R-Series). If you're using the newer screen, follow these steps to switch:

  1. On your iPad, open the Lightspeed Retail (R-Series) app

  2. Tap Manager in the bottom navigation

  3. Tap Settings

  4. Select Sales

  5. Enable the option to use the Older POS sales screen

Once enabled, return to the sales screen β€” you’ll now be using the Older POS interface where Marsello is supported.


How do I add a new customer to a sale in Lightspeed Retail R-Series?

To add a new customer to your Marsello customer database, all you need to do is add the new customer to the sale in Lightspeed Retail (R-Series) sales screen.


1. Add the customer's products that they want to buy to the sale.


2. Tap + New to create a new customer

To add a new customer to Marsello’s database, start in the Lightspeed Retail (R-Series) sales screen. First, add the products the customer wants to purchase to the sale. Then, tap + New to create a new customer profile.

3. Add your new customer's details:

  • First Name

  • Last Name

  • Email Address 1 (required)*

πŸ“ Note: The email address is the unique identifier used to match customer profiles across connected platforms (e.g. Shopify, WooCommerce, Lightspeed eCom).

Optional:

  • Mobile Number

  • Birthday

    • Your customers can also add mobile phone number and birthday at another time via Marsello's Complete your profile earn option

πŸ“ Tip: Include the country code for mobile numbers and avoid spaces or symbols (e.g. +614XXXXXXXX).


How do I capture my customer's marketing opt-in preferences?

⚠️ Important: Customers must opt in to receive marketing. By default, they are not subscribed.

When a new customer makes an in-store purchase, it's important that staff ask if they want to join their database and receive marketing via email and SMS.

4. Under Contact Information, update the customer's marketing preferences:


βœ… If the customer accepts marketing:

  • Select Yes, I have consent from my customer​

  • Choose their preferred channels:

    • βœ… Email β†’ select Email

    • βœ… SMS β†’ select Call

When a new customer makes an in-store purchase, staff should ask if they want to join the database and receive marketing via email and SMS. By default, customers do not accept marketing and must opt in through Marsello. Under Contact Information, next to Opt-In to Receive Marketing and Promotional Emails, staff indicate the customer's preferences. If the customer consents, select Yes, I have consent from my customer, then check the Email box for email marketing consent and the Call box for SMS marketing consent.

The customer will be able to receive store emails and SMS marketing via Marsello.

❌ If the customer does not accept marketing:

  • Leave consent unchecked

  • Ensure all communication options remain unselected

If the customer does not accept marketing, staff should leave the Yes, I have consent from my customer option unselected. Both the Email and Call checkboxes remain unchecked to indicate the customer has opted out of receiving store emails and SMS marketing via Marsello.


The customer will be automatically added to your Lightspeed Retail (R-Series) and Marsello database, but will not be eligible to receive email and SMS marketing from your store.

5. Tap Attach to sale, the customer will then be added to the sale


6. Complete the sale.

The customer will be automatically added to your Marsello customer database, including their details, accepts marketing preferences, and sales data.
