Exclude customers and product categories from your loyalty program for BigCommerce

Blacklisting customers allows you to exclude certain customer groups such as staff, suppliers, and other types of customers from your loyalty program. While blacklisting product categories allow you to exclude certain products from your loyalty program so that customers can't earn points for purchasing those products. By default, all customers and product categories are included in your loyalty program.

Before you get started with blacklisting customers from loyalty

Here are some key details to note before getting started with blacklisting customers in BigCommerce:

  • By default, all customers can earn points for purchasing any product from any category.

  • Marsello uses the BigCommerce Customer Group for Customer Blacklisting.

  • Blacklisted customers can still be part of your email marketing list. If you already have a customer group that you would like to exclude, please skip ahead to the next section.


Create a customer group in BigCommerce

1. In your BigCommerce admin, go to the Customers, and click Customer Groups


2. On the Customer Groups page, click Create a Customer Group


3. Name your group, e.g. Loyalty Blacklist - Staff

4. Click Save & Exit. Your customer group will now be created in your BigCommerce account.


5. In the Customers nav, Click View to return to your customer list.


6. Search for the customer by name or email address


7. Next to the Customer, click No group to open the drop-down, then select your new customer group

8. Click Save to assign that customer to the group. Repeat this for all of the customers that you would like to exclude from your loyalty program.

How to exclude a customer group from loyalty

1. In your Marsello app admin, go to Settings


2. Under Order Rewarding, go to Exclude customers that are tagged with one of:


3. Start to enter the customer group name, then select your Customer group

4. Click Save. Now, customers in this BigCommerce customer group will be excluded from your loyalty program. They will not earn points when they make a purchase.

πŸ“ Note: If you want to add the customer back into your loyalty program in the future, just remove them from the customer group in BigCommerce.


How it works – Your customers' experience

If a blacklisted customer makes a purchase, the customer will not earn points for that order.

Before you get started with blacklisting product categories from loyalty

Here are some key details to note about excluding product categories from loyalty:

  • You can exclude as many Product Categories from your loyalty program as needed.

  • If you have just created the product category in BigCommerce, this can take up to 15 minutes to sync into Marsello.


1. In your Marsello admin, go to Settings


2. Under BigCommerce Order Rewarding, go to Do not reward points on products that belong to one of these categories


3. Select the product categories that you'd like to exclude from your loyalty program.

4. Click Automatically include new subcategories, if you also want subcategories to be blacklisted from your loyalty program (Optional).


5. Click Save. All products in that Product Category in BigCommerce will now be excluded from your loyalty program.

How it works – Your customers' experience

When your customer makes an order, Marsello automatically checks your order rewarding settings. If the order contains a product that has been blacklisted, the customer will not earn loyalty points for purchasing that product.


If the customer has other products in their order that aren't excluded from your loyalty program, they can earn points for purchasing those products.
