Blacklisting customers allows you to exclude certain customer groups such as staff, suppliers, and other types of customers from your loyalty program. While blacklisting product categories allow you to exclude certain products from your loyalty program so that customers can't earn points for purchasing those products. By default, all customers and product categories are included in your loyalty program.


Exclude (blacklist) customers from loyalty in Shopify

Before you get started with blacklisting customers from loyalty

Here are some key details to note before getting started with blacklisting customers in Shopify:

  • By default, all customers can earn points for purchasing any product from any category.

  • Marsello uses the Shopify Customer Tag for Customer Blacklisting.

  • Blacklisted customers can still be part of your email marketing list. If you already have a customer tag that you would like to exclude, please skip ahead to the next section.

Create a customer group in Shopify

​1. In your Shopify admin, go to Customers


​​2. Under All Customers, select the customer(s) you would like to exclude

3. Scroll to the bottom of your customer list and click on the three dots next to Bulk Edit

4. Click Add Tags

4. Name your tag, e.g. Loyalty Blacklist - Staff, then click Save

Your customer tag will now be created in your Shopify account.

How to exclude a customer tag from loyalty

1. In your Marsello app admin, go to Settings


2. Under Order Rewarding, go to Exclude customers that are tagged with one of:


​​3. Click to open the drop-down, then click the Shopify Customer tag

4. Click Save. ​Now, customers in this Shopify customer group will be excluded from your loyalty program. They will not earn points when they make a purchase.

πŸ“ Note: If you want to add the customer back into your loyalty program in the future, just remove the Shopify tag from the customer in Shopify.

How it works – Your customers' experience

If a blacklisted customer makes a purchase, the customer will not earn points for that order.


Exclude (blacklist) products with a specific product tag from your loyalty program with Shopify

Before you get started with blacklisting products with a specific product tag from loyalty

  • Product tag blacklisting allows you to exclude certain products from your loyalty program so that customers can't earn points for purchasing that product(s).

  • ​By default, your customers can earn points for purchasing any product.

Create a product tag in Shopify

1. In your Shopify Admin, go to Products


​​2. Select the product(s) you would like to exclude


3. Scroll to the bottom of your product list and click on the three dots next to Bulk Edit, then click Add Tags


4. Name your tag, e.g. Loyalty Blacklist, then click Save

Your product tag will now be created in your Shopify account.

How to exclude specific products with a product tag from your loyalty program

1. In your Marsello admin, go to Loyalty > Settings


2. Under Shopify Order Rewarding, go to "Do not reward points on products that are tagged with one of:" and click to open the drop-down, then click the Product Tag(s) that you would like to exclude from your loyalty program

πŸ“ Note: If you have just added the product tag, it can take 15 minutess to sync into Marsello settings. You can exclude as many Shopify Product Tags from your loyalty program as needed.

​3. Click Save. ​All products with that Shopify product tag will now be excluded from your loyalty program.

πŸ“ Note: If you want to add the product back into your loyalty program in the future, just remove the tag from the product in Shopify.

How it works – Your customers' experience

If the customer's purchase includes a product that is in the blacklisted product list the customer will not earn points for that particular product.


In your Marsello admin, under the customer's profile, this will show as a line item in the points calculation.

Exclude (blacklist) product collections from your loyalty program with Shopify

Before you get started with product collections from loyalty

  • Exclude product collections from your loyalty program, so customers can't earn points for purchasing those products.

  • ​By default, your customers can earn points for purchasing any product from any collection.

  • Marsello uses Shopify's Product Collection ID for Product Collection Blacklisting.

How to find a Product Collection ID in Shopify

1. In your Shopify Admin, go to Products > Collections and click on the collection you would like to exclude.

2. In the URL of your Collection, copy the ending set of numbers

This is your Collection's unique ID code. Please save this for the next step.
Repeat this for all of the Product Collections that you would like to exclude from your loyalty program.

How to exclude product collections from your loyalty program

1. In your Marsello admin, go to Loyalty > Settings


2. Staying on the Loyalty Settings page, scroll down to the Shopify section and look for the field Do not reward points on products that belong to one of these collections (Collection IDs):


​​3. Enter your Collection ID (9-digit number) in the text box, and click Add. (As you are typing in the numbers for your collection ID, the collection name will appear in the drop-down menu.)

πŸ“ Note: If you have just added the product to the product collection, it can take 15 minutes to sync into Marsello settings. You can exclude as many Product Collections from your loyalty program as needed. Simply add in each Collection ID one at a time separated by commas).

​4. Click Save. ​All products in that Product Collection in Shopify will now be excluded from your loyalty program.

πŸ“ Note: Marsello doesn't currently support Smart (Automated) Collections. If you are looking to create a collection that works in a similar fashion and syncs to Marsello, we recommend taking the following steps on your Shopify admin:

1. Go to Product > Collection > Create Collection​

2. Set the Collection type to "Manual"

3. Create a product tag specific to this collection in Shopify. Then, manually tag each product for this collection.

4. From your Marsello admin, go to Order Rewarding Settings and select the tag from the drop-down menu of the field called "Do not reward points on products that are tagged with one of these collections:"
