What is a business registration number and why is it being required?

A Business Registration Number (BRN) is an official identifier issued by a government authority when a business is legally registered. It helps confirm that a business is legitimate and operating in line with local regulations.

Depending on where your business is registered, your BRN may be called something different. Common examples include:

  • ABN (Australian Business Number) — Australia

  • EIN (Employer Identification Number) — United States

  • Company Number / CRN — United Kingdom

  • NZBN (New Zealand Business Number) — New Zealand

For Toll-Free Verification (TFV), providing a BRN helps carriers and regulators verify the identity of the business sending messages. This builds trust, reduces spam and fraud, and helps ensure your messages are delivered reliably.

By verifying businesses at the source, BRNs help ensure messages:

  • Originate from a registered business entity

  • Align with known industry use cases

  • Meet opt-in and content policy expectations

Ultimately, this leads to stronger deliverability, reduced spam, and long-term trust for both businesses and their customers across carrier networks.

What are the current BRN requirements?

This section outlines the current Business Registration Number (BRN) requirements based on where your business is registered. Use the guidance below to make sure you provide the correct details for your region and avoid delays when submitting your Toll-Free Verification.

Policy details by region

  • US-based organizations

    • Required BRN: Employer Identification Number (EIN)

      • The EIN must match the legal business name used in your submission.

        • If you don’t have an EIN (for example, if you’re a sole proprietor or self-run business with no employees), you can still proceed.

        • In this case, set the businessType to SOLE_PROPRIETOR.

  • Organizations outside the US

    • Provide your official business registration number as issued by a national or local business authority.

    • You’ll also need to include:

      • Legal business name

      • Issuing country

      • Name of the registration authority

      • Examples: Companies House (UK), Corporations Canada, etc.

What are the new required BRN fields for a TFV?

Three new fields have been added to the TFV submission form with respect to BRN requirements:

  • Business Registration Number (BRN): The official government-issued identifier that verifies your business is legally registered.

  • Business Registration Type: The legal structure of your business (for example, sole proprietor or registered company).

  • Issuing Country of Business Registration: The country where your business is officially registered and where the BRN was issued.
